It seems that everyone has claimed the title of being a social media expert in the year 2010. Although there is no official social media degree one can obtain many are spending top dollar for someone to tell them how to do social media. People across the U.S. are attending social media boot camps, seminars and workshops hoping to win big. Although there are some general guidelines one should follow when trying to gain a presence on social media it is important to add your own personality and flavor to each of your accounts and not just do social media the way “The Guy” told you to. That is not to say having your social media handled by a professional couldn’t prove beneficial but it is important you create something that represents your true self. So many people have jumped on the bandwagon of revealing hidden social media tips and it is my opinion some of these tips are proving to be detrimental in gaining a strong following. PTS Social Media with a tag line of We Do It For You would like to share their insight on the Top 10 Things That Will Get You Defriended on Facebook. So even if you have more than a 1000 friends and your social media expert said it was ok please take our advice and let us do it for you.
1) Pick an appropriate Facebook picture. There is nothing more unappetizing then letting someone into your Facebook community who looks like a mass murderer.
2) Please do not post information on a daily basis regarding Internet Marketing. There is nothing more invasive then being invited to webinars, or how to make things “go viral”, or about how social networking is not just “some fad.” Once in a while but every day is a NO NO.
3) Making an account for your baby and dog is one thing but when that baby starts posting information on your wall it is fair to say the line has been crossed.
4) It is okay to comment on someone’s Facebook if you feel deeply compelled by what they wrote. It is not okay to become a stranger’s biggest fan. Do not repeatedly post on someone’s Facebook wall that you do not know.
5) It is a big problem when people release photo shoots of themselves looking at their computer with slightly contorted model face. This can result in automatic defriend.
6) Do not max out the number of friends you have on Facebook. When I befriend someone and I can’t be their friend but I can be their fan it feels like I won a consolation prize.
7) Please do not befriend me if you don’t have a Facebook profile picture of an actual human. How do I know who you are if I am forced to look at some cryptic images.
(8) It is strange when someone you barely know is befriending your family members and school friends from another state. It feels like a stalker trying to invade all areas of your life.
9) Do not post your political opinions on Facebook. Sure it’s your page but by ranting your beliefs could drive some unexpected people away.
10) Do not what ever you do befriend someone again after they defriended you even if you think it was a mistake.
PTS Social Media feels inclined to educate you on all things relating to social media so if you have ever defriended someone please post your story below.

You are very right about these tips. I defriended two people who kept inviting me to sales events at a car dealership. Not only were they defriended, but from the weekly annoyance of the invite on my feed, and in my email, I am guarenteed to never consider purchaing a vehicle from that dealership. I also defriended someone who posted the same plea to became involved in his MLM company five or six times a day. I was annoyed in three days enough to remove him. With the election coming to Arizona in a few days, I have been hit by too many people pushing their agendas on others, they have been hidden from my feed.
Thank you Doug for the blog . . . I feel very informed and enlighten as to the correct Facebook etiquette . . .
Good information and I agree for the most part. I do think babies and pets should not be allowed to have their own profiles. But I also think its silly to consider someone a stalker just because they friend your family and school friends. A lot of people need neighbors for farmville or members in their mafia and they would rather have friends of friends than unknown weirdos. Feeling invaded for that reason makes YOU seem controlling and threatened about who else your friends can be friends with. It’s better not to consider a stalker a stalker until they have actually done something to YOU.
Very good and worthy words.
Thanks, Doug, for the blog. It was informative and useful.
I found this article to be insightful & very very accurate. I have experienced some of the “Do Not Do” & can say creating healthy boundries outlining your personal expectations is a very good idea.. Thank you Andrew Shainker for writing this article so I can post this list on my facebook page outlining some of my own personal concerns…Nameste’
Interesting Blog! I find your advise to be quite good for the typical person; however, I would make the caveat that it depends on the purpose of the page. The purpose is the all deciding factor when creating pages. Is it a personal page, a company page, a fan page and/or a group? Each type of page will have it’s own set of etiquette rules, if you will.
